TikTok Caption Character Limit 2026: 4,000 vs 2,200

TikTok's app takes captions of up to 4,000 characters, but scheduling tools get 2,200 through TikTok's API. What counts, emoji math and how to write one.

Short answer: a TikTok caption can be up to 4,000 characters when you type it in the TikTok app, but only up to 2,200 when it is published through TikTok's Content Posting API, which is how scheduling tools post. If you write captions ahead of time and schedule them, 2,200 is your real limit. Hashtags, @ mentions, line breaks and emoji all count. Paste a draft into the free social media character counter to see the count TikTok's API limit is checked against.

Every TikTok caption limit

What Limit Where the number comes from
Video caption, typed in the app 4,000 characters Raised from 2,200 in August 2023, as reported at the time; we found no TikTok help page that states it
Video caption, published through the API 2,200 UTF-16 units TikTok's direct post reference: "The maximum length is 2200 in UTF-16 runes."
Photo post title, through the API 90 UTF-16 units TikTok's photo post reference
Photo post description, through the API 4,000 UTF-16 units TikTok's photo post reference
Caption shown before you tap it not published TikTok gives no number; the start of the caption sits over the video

The two video numbers are not a contradiction. The app was raised to 4,000, and the API that third-party tools use still says 2,200. A scheduler cannot send more than TikTok's API accepts, so a 3,000-character caption has to be posted from the app, by hand.

TikTok has changed this limit often. Captions started at 150 characters, went to 300 in late 2021, to 2,200 in September 2022, and to 4,000 in August 2023 (Adweek, Search Engine Journal, OnlineMarketing.de). If a guide still says 150 or 300, it is out of date.

What counts toward the limit

Everything in the caption counts: letters, spaces, punctuation, every line break, emoji, hashtags with their # sign, @ mentions and links. TikTok's API reference says hashtags and mentions in the caption "will be matched, or deliminated by spaces or new lines", so a hashtag is part of the caption text, not a separate field.

The unit is the catch. TikTok's API measures in what it calls "UTF-16 runes": read as UTF-16 code units, the way JavaScript counts a string, not as letters you see. Plain letters, digits and most accented letters are 1 each, but emoji are not:

You type TikTok's API counts (UTF-16) PostBoost counts
Hello 5 5
A line break 1 1
๐Ÿ˜€ or โค๏ธ 2 2
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ (with a skin tone) or a flag 4 2
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง (a family emoji) 8 2
A "bold" letter from a font generator (๐) 2 2
#tiktoktips 11 11

PostBoost counts every emoji as 2, the same way for TikTok as for Instagram, so a caption heavy with skin tones, flags or family emoji can count lower in PostBoost than in TikTok's API. It only matters close to the limit: if a caption is within a few dozen characters of 2,200 and full of combined emoji, trim it a little more. Styled "bold" letters cost 2 each in both counts, which adds up quickly in a long caption.

Write the caption for the first line

Almost nobody reads 2,200 characters on a video. The caption sits over the bottom of the video, and only its start is visible until someone taps it, so the first line has to work on its own. TikTok does not publish how many characters show; it depends on the screen and on how much else is in that corner. Keep the point of the video in the first sentence.

A simple order that fits most videos:

  1. The hook: what the video shows or the question it answers, in one short line.
  2. Context the video does not say out loud: the product name, the recipe quantities, the source of a claim.
  3. One next step: a question for the comments, or a reason to save or share the video.
  4. A few hashtags that describe the video.

Use the words people would search for. When TikTok raised the limit to 2,200 in 2022, Search Engine Journal reported that the in-app notice said longer descriptions help videos become "more searchable and better recommended" (Search Engine Journal), and TikTok lists captions and hashtags among the video information its recommendations use (TikTok Newsroom). Name the thing plainly ("sourdough starter", "Excel pivot table") rather than only being clever.

Stuck on the first line? The free hook generator gives you openings by style, the TikTok caption generator has a caption formula and templates, and the TikTok hashtag generator suggests a short set of tags. Because the caption and TikTok's buttons cover part of the frame, check on-screen text with the safe zone checker so the caption does not hide it.

Check a TikTok caption in PostBoost

PostBoost publishes to TikTok through the Content Posting API, so it holds every TikTok caption to 2,200. In the composer, the check runs as you type for every TikTok account in the post:

  • Over 2,200: "Maximum of 2200 characters allowed." shows for the TikTok account, and the post cannot be scheduled until you shorten it.
  • No media: a TikTok post can't be text only, and the composer asks for media before it lets you schedule.

The same post can go to Instagram, LinkedIn or Bluesky at once. Each account is checked against its own limit, so the shortest one decides; to keep a long TikTok caption, create a separate version for the TikTok account.

To count a caption without an account, call the free character counter API (countCharacters). No token is needed:

curl -X POST "https://postboost.co/app/api/tools/social-media-character-counter" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "network": "tiktok",
"text": "3 hooks that keep people watching past second 2 ๐Ÿ˜€\n\nSave this for your next video.\n\n#tiktoktips #contentcreator #smallbusiness"
  }'

The answer gives the count, the limit and how many characters are left:

{"hashtags":3,"networks":[{"key":"tiktok","label":"TikTok caption","limit":2200,"count":126,"remaining":2074,"over":false}]}

The checkPost endpoint goes one step further and checks the media too: send "networks": ["tiktok"] and a media object such as {"count": 1, "type": "video"}, and it returns errors such as too_long or media_required for TikTok. Without a token you get 30 calls a minute.

From Claude or another AI assistant connected to PostBoost, ask: "Run check-post on this caption for TikTok with one video and tell me if it fits." The check-post and count-characters tools need no connected account and return the same numbers.

FAQ

What is the TikTok caption character limit?

In the TikTok app, up to 4,000 characters, a limit reported when TikTok raised it from 2,200 in August 2023. Captions published through TikTok's Content Posting API, which scheduling tools use, are capped at 2,200 for a video, so a scheduled caption has to fit 2,200.

Why does my scheduler stop at 2,200 characters on TikTok?

Because TikTok's own API does. Its direct post reference gives the video caption a maximum length of 2,200 in UTF-16 units. Any tool that publishes through the official API, PostBoost included, has to keep video captions within that, even though the app itself takes 4,000.

Do hashtags count toward the TikTok caption limit?

Yes. Hashtags and @ mentions are part of the caption text, so every character, including the # and @ signs, counts. TikTok's API reference says hashtags and mentions in the caption are matched when they are separated by spaces or new lines.

How do emoji count in a TikTok caption?

TikTok's API counts UTF-16 units. A simple emoji such as ๐Ÿ˜€ is 2 units, an emoji with a skin tone or a flag is 4, and a family emoji is 8. PostBoost counts every emoji as 2, so leave some room if a caption near 2,200 is full of combined emoji.

How long is a TikTok photo post description?

TikTok's API reference for photo posts allows a title of up to 90 characters and a description of up to 4,000. PostBoost checks every TikTok caption against 2,200, so a caption that passes PostBoost's check fits either way.

What happens in PostBoost if a TikTok caption is too long?

The composer shows "Maximum of 2200 characters allowed." for the TikTok account and will not schedule the post until you shorten it. The free character counter and post checker, on the web and through the API, give the same count without an account.
