Instagram Hashtag Limit in 2026: 5 per Post, Not 30

Instagram now allows 5 hashtags per post or reel, down from 30. What changed, why many guides still say 30, the first-comment question and how to pick 5.

Short answer: you can use up to 5 hashtags on an Instagram post or reel. Instagram announced the cap on 18 December 2025 and rolled it out gradually, replacing the old limit of 30. Instagram has not said whether hashtags in the first comment count, so treat 5 as the total for the whole post. Pick 5 specific tags instead of 30 generic ones: the free Instagram hashtag generator gives you a niche set and never puts more than 5 in the box.

What changed, and when

On 18 December 2025 Instagram said it would "gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five" (Social Media Today). Until then you could add up to 30.

Two words in that sentence matter:

  • Gradually. The change did not reach every account on the same day, so for a while some people could still post 30 tags while others were stopped at 5. If a friend says "I still use 20", their account may have been one of the last to change. Do not plan around that.
  • Caption. The announcement is about the caption of a post or reel. It says nothing about comments or stories (more on both below).

Instagram's reason, in its own words: using "fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content's performance". Before the announcement it had tested a cap for about a year, with many accounts limited to 3 tags in the latest test, according to the same report.

Why so many guides still say 30

Search for the limit and you will find both numbers, often on the same page. There are three reasons:

  1. Most articles were written before December 2025 and never updated. "Use up to 30 hashtags" was correct advice for years.
  2. Meta's developer documentation still says 30. The Instagram Graph API error-code page, which tools use when they publish for you, lists "Maximum 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags" as the fix for a caption that is too long (checked 15 October 2026). It is a troubleshooting line, not a statement of the current app rule.
  3. The rollout was gradual, so early reports conflicted.

The app rule is the one that counts. Write for 5.

Do first-comment hashtags count?

Putting hashtags in the first comment was a popular way to keep captions clean. Under the old rule, most guides said caption and comment tags shared one budget of 30.

For the 5-tag rule, Instagram has not published a clear answer. Its announcement only talks about captions, and what people report from their own accounts differs. Until Instagram says more, the safe plan is:

  • Use 5 hashtags in total, either all in the caption or all in the first comment.
  • Do not split them (3 in the caption, 3 in the comment) and hope both are counted separately.
  • If discovery matters for the post, put them in the caption. It is the part the announcement covers, and people read it first.

How to pick the 5

With 25 fewer slots, each tag has to describe the post. A simple mix that works for most accounts:

slot type example for a coffee shop post about a new single-origin espresso
1 topic of this post #singleoriginespresso
2 broader niche #specialtycoffee
3 audience or community #baristalife
4 place, if you serve a place #lisboncoffee
5 your branded tag #yourshopname

Then cut anything that would fit almost any post on your account (#coffee, #instagood, #reels). Tags that describe every post describe none of them.

Two habits make the 5 slots count:

  • Rotate per post. Keep the branded tag fixed and change the other four to match what the post is about. The same block of 5 on every post tells Instagram nothing new.
  • Write the caption for search too. Hashtags are no longer the only way people find posts; the words in the caption describe the post as well. Name the thing ("single-origin espresso from Ethiopia") instead of relying on tags alone.

The free Instagram hashtag generator starts from a curated set for your niche: click tags to swap them in and out, and it keeps at most 5 in the box for you to copy. To check the caption itself, paste it into the social media character counter, which shows the 2,200-character caption limit and counts Instagram hashtags separately.

How PostBoost handles the limit

PostBoost checks the 5-tag rule before a post can be scheduled, so you find out in the composer instead of after a failed publish.

  • In the composer, an Instagram post or reel with more than 5 hashtags in the caption shows "Maximum of 5 hashtags allowed." for that account, and the post cannot be scheduled until you trim it. Stories are not checked, because the announcement does not cover them.
  • Only the caption is counted. PostBoost does not count hashtags you add in the first comment, so if you move your tags there, keep the total at 5 yourself.
  • The REST API and the MCP tools run the same check. A POST /posts call that schedules an Instagram caption with 6 hashtags is rejected with a validation error naming the rule, so an AI agent or a script cannot slip past it.
  • Facebook Pages are different: PostBoost allows up to 30 hashtags there but suggests keeping to 5. On other networks the composer gives a soft hint when a post has more tags than the network tends to reward (for example 3 on LinkedIn and 2 on X); these are suggestions, not blocks.

Save your sets as hashtag groups

If you reuse tags, save them once. In the composer, click the hashtag button ("Open Hashtag Manager"), then New Hashtag Group, give it a name and up to 5 tags, and Save Hashtag Group. Next time, open the manager and click Insert on the group to add its tags to the post. Keep each group to 5 tags or fewer for Instagram, and make one group per topic rather than one big group for everything.

Groups are also in the API, so a script can keep them in sync:

curl -X POST "https://postboost.co/app/api/$WORKSPACE_UUID/hashtag-groups" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $POSTBOOST_API_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "name": "Espresso launches",
    "content": "#singleoriginespresso #specialtycoffee #baristalife #lisboncoffee #yourshopname"
  }'

content is the text that gets inserted, up to 3,000 characters. See createHashtagGroup in the API reference and core concepts for templates and other saved items.

See which tags earn their slot

For a connected Instagram account, Analytics has a Hashtags tab. It lists your top hashtags by number of posts, shows hashtag usage over time, and ranks the "most effective hashtags": tags used in at least 2 posts, ordered by average engagement per post. It reads the hashtags in your captions, so tags you put in comments do not show up there, one more reason to keep them in the caption.

Use it once a month: drop the tags at the bottom of the list, and give their slots to new ones to test. When you are ready to plan Instagram posts with the 5-tag check built in, start free and connect your account.

FAQ

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram in 2026?

Five per post or reel. Instagram announced on 18 December 2025 that it would gradually lower the number of hashtags you can put in a caption for a reel or post to five. Before that the limit was 30.

Is the Instagram hashtag limit 30 or 5?

It is 5 for posts and reels. The 30 you still see comes from older guides and from Meta's developer error-code page, which still lists 30 hashtags next to the 2,200-character caption limit. Instagram's announcement is newer, so plan for 5.

Do hashtags in the first comment count toward the limit?

Instagram's announcement only mentions captions, and Instagram has not clearly said how comments count. The safe rule is to use 5 in total, in the caption or in the first comment, not 5 in each.

Does the 5-hashtag limit apply to Instagram Stories?

The announcement names posts and reels only. PostBoost applies the 5-tag check to Instagram posts and reels and leaves stories out, for the same reason.

Do hashtags still help reach on Instagram?

They help Instagram and people understand what a post is about, and posts stay findable through hashtag search. Instagram's own reasoning for the cap is that up to 5 targeted tags can perform better than many generic ones.

What happens in PostBoost if an Instagram caption has more than 5 hashtags?

The composer shows the error "Maximum of 5 hashtags allowed." for the Instagram account and will not schedule the post until you remove the extra tags. The API and the MCP tools apply the same check.
