# Threads character counter

Paste your post and see its length the way Threads counts it, with each emoji counted as its UTF-8 bytes, plus how many different links it has against Threads' cap of 5.

## Why Threads needs its own counter

Most counters count an emoji as 1 or 2 characters. Threads counts it as its UTF-8 bytes, so a post with a dozen emoji can be 30 or more characters longer than it looks, and a family emoji alone takes 18. This page counts the way Threads does, so a post that fits here fits on Threads.

## The 5-link rule

Threads also limits links: a post may contain at most 5 different http or https links. Repeating the same link does not add to the count. A post over the cap fails when it is published, so check the links line before you schedule it.

## Facts

- Threads allows 500 characters per post and counts each emoji as its UTF-8 bytes (Threads API docs, checked 2026-10-21).
- Threads rejects a post with more than 5 unique links (Threads API docs, checked 2026-10-21).
- PostBoost warns about both before a Threads post is published, with the same rules as this page.

## How to use

1. Type or paste your Threads post into the box.
2. Read the count against 500 and how many characters are left, or how far over you are.
3. Check the links line: Threads accepts at most 5 different links in a post.
4. Check the chips below to see which other networks the same text fits.

## FAQ

### How does Threads count characters?

Threads allows 500 characters per post. Letters, digits, spaces and punctuation count as 1 each, but every emoji counts as its UTF-8 bytes: most emoji as 4, a family emoji as 18. So an emoji-heavy post reaches the limit much sooner than its length suggests.

### How many links can a Threads post have?

At most 5 different links. The same link repeated counts once. Threads rejects a post with more than 5 different links, so the counter warns you before you publish.

### How much does a link count toward the 500 characters?

This counter counts each link at its full length, character by character, so long tracking links use up your 500 characters quickly. Shorter links leave more room for your text.

### Do line breaks count on Threads?

Yes. Each line break counts as 1 character.

### What happens when my post is over 500 characters?

Threads won't publish it. Shorten it, or split it into a thread of replies with the cross-post formatter, which also checks each post's links.

### Does this page store what I type?

No. The counter runs in your browser and never sends your text anywhere.
