# Social media character counter

Paste a post and see at once how it fits on X, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube and Google Business Profile.

## Character limits

| Network | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 | Links count as 23 characters; emoji and CJK characters count as 2. X Premium accounts can post up to 25,000. |
| Threads post | 500 | |
| Bluesky post | 300 | Counted in graphemes: an emoji, even a family emoji, counts as 1. |
| Mastodon post | 500 | Default for most servers; some allow more. Links count as 23 characters and @user@server mentions count without the server. |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 | |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 | PostBoost allows up to 5 hashtags per Instagram post. |
| Facebook Page post | 5,000 | PostBoost caps Facebook posts at 5,000 characters; Facebook itself accepts longer posts. |
| TikTok caption | 2,200 | |
| Pinterest Pin description | 500 | |
| YouTube video title | 100 | |
| YouTube video description | 5,000 | |
| Google Business Profile post | 1,500 | |

## Why every network counts differently

Each social network sets its own length limit, and they do not count the same way. A post that fits on LinkedIn can be ten times too long for X, and the same emoji can cost one character on Bluesky and two on X. Checking a post by hand against each network is slow and easy to get wrong, especially when one message goes to five or six channels.

This counter shows every network side by side. Type once and you see how many characters each network sees, how many are left, and which networks your post is too long for.

## How the counting works

- **X** uses a weighted count. Each link counts as 23 characters. Emoji and characters outside the Latin and common punctuation ranges, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean, count as 2.
- **Bluesky** counts graphemes: what a reader sees as one character counts as one, even an emoji family made of several code points.
- **Mastodon** counts each link as 23 characters and counts a mention like @name@server.social as @name. Many servers keep the default 500; some allow more.
- **Every other network** counts Unicode code points, so an emoji usually counts as 1 or 2 depending on how it is built.

## Write once, fit everywhere

The quickest way to fit a long post on short networks is to write the full version first, then cut a short version for X, Threads and Bluesky. Put the key message and the link in the first sentence, since feeds often cut long posts after a line or two. Keep hashtags to a few relevant ones: PostBoost allows up to 5 on Instagram.

When you schedule with PostBoost, the composer runs the same checks for each connected account before a post goes out, so a post that is too long never reaches the network only to fail.

## How to use

1. Type or paste your post into the box.
2. Read the count and the characters left for each network; a card turns red when the post is too long.
3. Check the Instagram hashtag counter if you post there.
4. Shorten the text until every network you post to is within its limit, then copy it.

## FAQ

### What is the character limit on X (Twitter)?

280 characters for a standard account. X counts every link as 23 characters, whatever its real length, and counts emoji and most Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as 2. X Premium accounts can post up to 25,000 characters.

### How many characters can an Instagram caption have?

2,200 characters. PostBoost also allows at most 5 hashtags per Instagram post, which the counter shows separately.

### What is the character limit on LinkedIn?

3,000 characters for a post, from a personal profile or a company Page.

### What is the character limit on Threads and Bluesky?

Threads allows 500 characters. Bluesky allows 300, counted in graphemes, so an emoji counts as 1 even when it is made of several code points.

### Why does a link count as 23 characters?

X and Mastodon shorten or normalise links, so every URL takes the same 23 characters of your limit. The counter applies that rule for X and Mastodon only; other networks count the link as written.

### Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The counter runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to PostBoost or stored.

### Are these the limits PostBoost uses when it schedules posts?

Yes. The numbers come from the same rules the PostBoost composer checks before it schedules or publishes a post.
